Japanese words are formed using Hiragana, Katakana or Kanji. These are the 3 important form of Japanese language writing system.

You must know how to read Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji to understand Japanese words (and particularly for JLPT vocabulary words found in this site).

Note: If your computer/device cannot show Japanese fonts, you can browse the Kanji list as Images from posters.harushi.com

Learn Hiragana first as they are the most simple form of representing Japanese. Hiragana is a Japanese syllabary primarily used for writing native Japanese words or naturalised Japanese words and grammatical elements.

Then learn Katakana.
Katakana is a Japanese syllabary primarily used for writing foreign words, names, loan words (called as Gairaigo in Japanese) and sometimes for emphasis.

Kanji, as you can note that comes first in the menu of this webpage. Must learn Kanji to fully understand Japanese.

Once you have learned how to ready Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji you can learn the Japanese words.
